Amazonian fish

The pirarucu is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world. It can grow up to 10 ft long and weighs around 400 lb. This size is small compared to the documented size about 100 years ago which was 15 ft (4.6 m). This fish has a flat bony head, followed by an elongated body which is scaly. Its tail is short and stumpy. The color of this fish is begins with a copperish green at the head then to a darker blue-green which fades at the white belly. The fins at the edge of the tail are a reddish color.

Piraruсu, one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, lives in the Amazon river, where poachers catches it.
However, poachers, in turn, is caught the Brazilian police. Yesterday, for example, in the market city of Manaus police seized 66 illegally caught pirarucus. The size of those fishes are impressive.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault’s mission is to provide a safety net against accidental loss of diversity in traditional genebanks. While the popular press has emphasized its possible utility in the event of a major regional or global catastrophe, it will certainly be more frequently accessed when genebanks lose samples due to mismanagement, accident, equipment failures, funding cuts and natural disasters. Such events occur with some regularity. In recent years, some national genebanks have also been destroyed by war and civil strife. There are some 1,400 crop diversity collections around the world, but many are in politically unstable or environmentally threatened nations.
