What Are the Different Types of Memory Foam Mattresses?

According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, over 50 million Americans suffer from different sleep disorders. Poor quality sleep or little sleep can affect not just your day and put you in a bad mood, but it can also affect your long-term health.

Not getting enough sleep could lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or obesity. If you want to improve your sleep, there are several things you can do, including getting a better mattress. Keep reading to find out how to choose a mattress and the different types of memory foam mattresses.

How to Choose a Mattress to Improve Your Sleep

According to the Sleep Republic Mattress 2020, choosing a mattress to improve your sleep quality is important. But with so many different mattresses available, how do you know which one is right for you? Your sleeping requirements might be different from other people’s. Some people suffer from chronic back pain.

Some people might sleep on their side or back, and other people might prefer a hard mattress to a soft one. These are all factors that’ll help shape your decision when it comes to choosing a mattress type.

Types of Mattresses

But what mattress types are there? There are seven main types of mattresses, including:

  • Memory foam mattress
  • Open spring mattress
  • Bed-in-a-box mattress
  • Pocket spring mattress
  • Hybrid mattress
  • Latex mattress
  • And continuous and coil mattresses.

How do you choose the right mattress for you? You need to work out what you need from your sleep. If you need a firm mattress, you should choose a latex one, whereas if you need support while you sleep, you should choose a memory foam one.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are great for those who suffer from backache or need extra support while sleeping. That’s because the mattress molds into the shape of your body and can relieve pressure from your joints. Memory foam is also great for those who sleep on their side.

Open Spring

Open spring mattresses are often the cheaper option when it comes to mattresses. They are easy to turn because they are very light. However, open spring mattresses aren’t the comfiest choice and may not last very long, so they’re better for guest bedrooms.

Bed-in-a-Box

Bed-in-a-box mattresses are often great for delivery speed and ease of use. As the name suggests, the mattress is delivered in a box and can be left to inflate within several hours. These mattresses are either made from a hybrid of memory foam and springs or foam. Air foam mattresses are one of the best beds in a box for side sleepers.

Pocket Spring

Pocket spring mattresses are ideal for sleepers who want a cool night’s sleep, as they are made from more breathable and natural materials (such as lambswool) than other mattresses. However, this might make them more difficult to turn due to their weight and might not be a good choice if you have allergies.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses combine two different elements of beds. You can get hybrid mattresses made with pocket springs, latex, and memory foam.

Often hybrid mattresses come with a memory foam top and a pocket-sprung base, which offers comfort and support for your body.

Latex

Latex mattresses are great to stop you from overheating in the night, too, because they’re filled with breathable latex foam. Latex mattresses are also good for those who have allergies and for those who prefer a firmer mattress.

Continuous and Coil

Continuous and coil mattresses are another budget-friendly option. However, similar to the open spring mattress, the continuous and coil mattress might not last too long as they typically sag and wear easily.

You might think that all memory foam mattresses are the same, but there are also different categories of memory foam too. This next section looks for a foam mattress and wants to know how to choose a foam mattress. There are three main types of memory foam: traditional, plant-based, and gel. Traditional memory foam mattresses have been around since the 1970s and are made from petroleum-based materials.

The traditional memory foam can support your body and respond to your body’s shape and weight; this helps to minimize pressure in your joints and improve circulation. The plant-based memory foam mattresses use coconut foam, soy, or other plant materials.

The plant-based memory foam mattress offers a greater spring back than the traditional memory foam mattresses. They are also more environmentally friendly than traditional memory foam mattresses. Then, there’s the gel memory foam mattress, which offers a cooler night’s sleep because it’s made from traditional memory foam and gel.

If you overheat during the night, the gel memory foam might be a good option for you. This is the softest mattress free from heat-trapping memory foam chemicals, so if you want a cool night’s sleep but want the right back support, this is the one for you.

Memory Foam Density

There are also three different types of density for memory foam, including high, medium, and low. High-density memory foam is the most durable out of the three. Medium-density is better for movement isolation, making it ideal for those who share the bed with a partner. Low-density memory foam is easier to mold and shape into your body; this means that your body will adjust to the mattress quicker than, say, a high-density mattress. Density levels can be determined by the weight of the foam. Medium-density ones are often between 4 or 5 pounds per cubic foot, and high-density can be up to pounds per cubic foot.
