3 Things To Try If You Have Trouble Making Rent

While you might work hard to bring in enough money regularly, many people still find that they struggle to make ends meet and, on occasion, can’t pay their rent in full when they should. This can cause a lot of stress for you and anyone else living with you, as it can jeopardize your housing situation. Luckily, there are some things you can do to hopefully help you get through this situation and remain in a safe housing situation.

To help you see how this can be done, here are three things to try if you’re having trouble making rent.

Start Cutting Back In Other Areas

The very first thing you should do if you’re consistently having trouble coming up with the money for rent each month is to find other ways to cut back on your spending. If you are paying for things that aren’t completely necessary in your life, like streaming services or eating out occasionally, try cutting those things out and putting that money toward your rent.

However, suppose you aren’t spending excess money on things of this nature and still have a hard time regularly making the rent. In that case, you might need to either look for a way to make more money or find a new living situation that won’t be as expensive for you.

Try To Negotiate A Payment Plan

If you usually can make your rent payments but are going through a tough financial time at the moment, you might be able to work with your landlord to make some negotiations.

Before your rent is due, get in contact with your landlord and let them know that you don’t think you’ll be able to pay your rent in full when it is due. Ask if you can negotiate something like a payment plan, a partial payment, or a grace period until you get the money you need. Depending on your history with your landlord, you might be able to make this work for one month until you get back on your feet financially.

Wisely Borrow Money

For times when you are going to need more money to pay rent than you’ll be able to get for yourself in a reasonable period, you might need to borrow money to cover this expense.

While you can apply for a personal loan to pay your rent, this usually isn’t ideal. Instead, you may want to ask a friend or family member if they can loan you some money for a short period. You could also look into borrowing against your retirement or other lines of credit that you might have available to you. If you need to pay rent this month but don’t think you’ll have the funds to do it, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you develop some solutions.
