Treating Addiction: What Are Your Options?

Drug addiction is a veritable epidemic in modern society. There are party drugs available that have been popular for decades, but it is mainly opioids that claim the most lives in America these days. Regardless of what substance you are addicted to, though, if you’re living through this nightmare, it can sometimes seem like there’s no way out. You have some viable options, though; we’ll discuss them in detail now.

Spend Time in an Addiction Treatment Center

One option is to spend some time in an addiction treatment center. Various centers around the country have all kinds of programs associated with them. Some are outpatient programs, but an inpatient one is probably the better option if you’re trying to fight a physical drug addiction.

These treatment centers will have qualified medical professionals who can help you get clean. They can even restrain you if that’s what it takes to get you through those crucial hours and days without your drug of choice.

Quit Cold Turkey

You might also try to quit on your own. That’s challenging, but it’s sometimes possible if you have tremendous willpower. If you try to quit cold turkey, you’ve got a better chance of finding success if you enlist the help of some family members and friends. They can be there as you get through the first difficult stretch.

You can instruct them to stay with you to make sure you don’t escape to get more drugs if you’re craving a fix that badly, then you might try to slip past them if they let down their guard. Your friends and family members will have to care for you very much if they’re willing to perform this service for you.

Wean Yourself Off Drugs

If you feel that quitting your drug of choice all at once is not possible, then you might wean yourself off of the substance, bit by bit. You can cut back your dosage slowly so that it’s not such a shock to your body.

That can sometimes work, but, like quitting cold turkey, you will probably have a much better chance of success if you can enlist some friends or family members to help you. You might also hire an addiction specialist to babysit you while kicking the habit.

In all the scenarios we’ve described, you might be able to get off the drug that has enslaved you, but that does not necessarily mean you will stay off of it. You must recognize the triggers that get you to use that drug. Maybe that’s hanging out with friends at a bar if you’re addicted to alcohol. It could be that going clubbing is when you get your fix.

It will take determination and a strong support network around you to get you clean and to get you to remain that way. People do get clean, though, and you should be capable of it.
