Digital Marketing for Beginners: Misconceptions All Beginners Make

If you’re new to digital marketing, then I’m sure you have a few opinions forming in your mind. You assume certain things, and you try specific approaches.  The majority of the time, most beginners are guilty of making the same misconceptions.

They believe the same things, leading them down a path that ends with a catastrophic digital marketing campaign.  So, to stop this from happening to you, here are the common assumptions people make when they first start dealing with digital marketing:

SEO is all about keywordsSEO management

Keywords have always been a hot topic in the digital world. Mostly, people use them when talking about SEO.  So many beginners assume that they need to put loads of emphasis on keywords to achieve a good search ranking.

In fact, they think SEO is all about keywords.  In reality, keywords are just a small part of your search engine optimization strategy. There are so many things that come under the umbrella of SEO managementThink about link building, website content, social media signals, off-page SEO, and so on. Don’t put all of your focus on keywords, as this won’t help you reach your potential.

Website traffic is the most important metric.

As you start implementing a digital marketing strategy, you’ll find lots of metrics to look at. One of these is website traffic. It tells you how many visitors your website has over a specific period. It’s so common for beginners to think this is the most important metric.

As long as you’re driving traffic to your site – and the figure keeps going up – then you’re successful, right? Nope. Web traffic is somewhat important as you do want lots of people to visit your site. However, it means nothing if your visitors aren’t doing anything.

Instead, it would help if you cared more about conversion rates. A conversion rate tells you what percentage of your traffic goes on to complete an action. For example, it tells you how many go and buy a product.  This is far more important as it shows you’re benefitting from the traffic. You may have lots of traffic, but they all leave straight away without doing anything. As such, how are you benefitting?!

Digital marketing is all you need to think aboutnon-digital marketing methods.

It’s easy to get excited when you start looking at digital marketing. It seems like such a powerful tool, so you assume that it’s all you need to market and promote your business. However, this is a mistake. Don’t throw away all the traditional and non-digital marketing methods. Your business may benefit from a combined approach of digital and traditional.

Closing yourself off to an entire aspect of marketing is ludicrous!  As you read through these marketing misconceptions, it’s easy to see why people fall for them. Ultimately, it comes down to a lack of experience and knowledge.

If you’re new to digital marketing, then make sure you do as much research as possible and might consider help from an affordable SEO agency. If that doesn’t help you get to grips with things, then there’s no shame in finding a digital agency to assist you.  As long as you no longer make these mistakes, then you’ll be fine.
