Bad Habits That Impact Your Health

Looking after your health is just about the essential item on your to-do list, but that doesn’t mean it’s simple!  You may have bad habits that are impacting your health without even noticing.  If any of these five sound familiar, it’s time to ditch that bad habit for good!

Bad posture

A Brisbane Physio experts tell us that bad posture can lead to all sorts of problems, including back pain, shoulder pain, and nerve constriction. The strain on your body can lead to psychological stress and contribute to long-term health issues.

To improve your bad posture, you should keep your shoulders and back straight when you are sitting.  Ensure that your knees and hips are even in height and that your knees are bent at 90 degrees.

It’s advisable to use an ergonomic chair in your office or for your remote workstation. You can also try a posture corrector, a simple brace that literally helps you stop slouching and pulls your shoulders back.

Loud music

Listening to music that’s too loud can have long-term effects on your hearing health. The same goes for having the TV too loud or taking phone calls at a high volume.  Health guidelines advise us that sounds of 85 decibels or lower are safe. Anything that is above 85 decibels could compromise your hearing health.

When you listen to music or watch TV,  do not turn up the volume above 60%. Hearing loss signs are slight, to begin with, so you may not realize the damage.  To learn more about recognizing hearing problems, take a look at The Hearing Guy’s website.

Not enough water

Drinking enough water is essential to improve your health. If you don’t drink enough, you could experience a weakened immune system, dry skin, headaches, tiredness, and dehydration. A lack of water can also lead to constipation and bad breath. Health officials advise that you drink eight glasses of water a day; each glass should be 8-ounces. Drinking this amount per day is the equivalent of 2 liters.

Excessive social mediagood habits and bad habits

According to the Centre For Mental Health, excessive social media can negatively impact our mental health. Once we get started scrolling, it can become rather addictive! A study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology suggests that more than 30 minutes per day on social media adversely affect well-being.  With this in mind, try to limit your social media intake and practice more organic activities such as yoga or reading.

Sleep deprivation

Harvard Health reported that ‘one in three adults doesn’t get enough sleep.’ Lack of sleep can lead to stress, anxiety, and a poor immune system.  When sleep deprivation continues for a long while, serious health issues can arise. To improve your sleep habits, try to switch off the TV and phone at least an hour before you go to bed.  Calming activities such as yoga or meditation can help you to relax before you sleep.  For those who have trouble sleeping, supplements such as passionflower or magnesium can help.  Applications such as Headspace are useful for listening to sleep audio tracks.
