Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) was developed by the American psychologist Marsha M. Linehan in 1987 to treat the patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. 

This treatment approach helps to reduce the risk of way intense emotional reaction to stressful situations and reduces the risk of suicidal, aggressive or auto-destructive behavior. Dialectical behavioral psychotherapy is one of the directions of the “third wave” of behavioral psychotherapy. It is called “dialectical,” because the patient is offered to realize that there are many different points of view on the situation, which he perceives subjectively as “unbearable” and “hopeless.”

Due to this dialectical approach to the situation, the patient acquires the ability to calmly evaluate the pros and cons, and then choose that perspective to the problem that will allow him to behave in the most promising way to him. 

The word “dialectical” in the name of this method also emphasizes that a patient is taught to abandon the restrictive approach, targeting to straightforward notions of cause-effect relations. The patient is also instructed to find the optimal way of behavior by comparing different and sometimes contradictory opinions according to the dialectic scheme “thesis-antithesis-synthesis.” 

Dialectical psychotherapy is an eclectic flow.
