Work and Travel: 7 Bare Essentials to Take With You

Traveling and working. This always has my dream job, being able to work, and always be on the road.

But, with its fun and excitement is the fact that I have to live out of a suitcase, and not spend much time at home.

This, in turn, means I need a bag ready with my essentials to travel at the last minute. I can’t afford to miss flights.

But at the same time, I must be ready for delayed flights, and delayed meetings and reservations.

I’ve made a few mistakes but also learned lots of things to make traveling and working so much easier.

In my opinion, knowing the bare essentials you should take help at reducing the stress of traveling and working.

Traveling and Working: 7 essentials to take along when work and travelWork and Travel

An expandable carry-on bag

I used to pack my clothes in a separate luggage bag. However, I usually ended up not using half of the clothes I packed.

Besides, checking in luggage, and waiting at the baggage claim was a waste of time.

I learned that it’s way better and sensible to invest in a small carry-on bag.

Just make sure it conforms to TSA’s standards. It should at the same time be large enough to fit your basic necessitates.

I also ended up saving money with this investment because I no longer had to pay for extra luggage!

Wrinkle-free performance workwear jobs that allow you to travel

It’s true that most hotels now have irons and ironing boards for travelers. But you never know if you have the time to iron your clothes and look presentable for a meeting.

Besides, I so many times ended up reaching my destination late. And I many a time ended up running straight from the plane to the meeting.

I found a solution to the problem and started buying wrinkle-free performance suits and dresses. It anyway costs as much as normal workwear, but there’s no stress of ironing it.

You can alternatively invest in a wrinkle release spray to get rid of wrinkles on-the-go.

Laptop

It goes without a doubt you need your laptop with you. You can work at your wish, whenever you want.

You don’t even have to rush to the internet cafe whenever you need to send an email or make a Skype call.

You may even find it difficult getting adjusted to a new laptop’s OS and configuration.

It’s, in fact, the main reason I carry my own laptop around.

Besides, it’s perfect for holding Skype video calls with your family and loved ones. It goes a long way in bridging the gap so that you don’t feel each other’s absence much.

Laptop stand Laptop stand

Yes, I did have my laptop with me to do my work. But the tables and places where I worked weren’t ergonomically suited for me. I so usually ended up with a stiff and sore neck at the end of the day.

I started looking around for a solution, which I found in a laptop stand. It puts a complete end to your sore neck and back because it lets you place your laptop at the right height.

So it means you can work without having to strain your eyes, shoulders or neck.

I can even tilt the keyword to a better work position so that I don’t end up with wrist pain. Besides, I now also have my work peripherals like mouse and notebook at hand’s reach.

Most importantly, laptop stands increase the airflow around the laptop base. So it in the process also helps keep the laptop cool.

Power bank

I have had so many episodes where my phone and laptop were dead when I needed it the most. To make things worse, there were no charging stations nearby when you needed the most!

So I now make it a point to carry a power bank wherever I go. It is much better for powering my devices than looking around charging stations, and someone to bum a charge!

Of course, make sure you carry a fully charged power bank before you leave. If not, it won’t serve its purpose at all!

If you are going on a trip for days, a reliable mobile power station can be handy.

According to tool reviewer Bob Robinson of BestOfMachinery, portable power stations allow you to charge your appliances even when you are on the move. That is like a huge powerbank than can charge everything you need.

Travel pillow Travel pillow

All that traveling will eventually take its toll on your body. You sometimes don’t get enough sleep because of your traveling.

You can make amends by catching up on your sleep on the bus or train.

But, any traveler knows that it’s easier said than done!

You usually end up with a sore neck and shoulders sleeping against the seatback. Instead, I suggest you buy a travel pillow. It will support your neck for the few hours you sleep.

You can now at least get a few hours of comfortable and uninterrupted sleep. These pillows are not only convenient and soft, but they are also easy-to-store.

The good data plan and Wi-Fi hot spot device

As I am a frequent traveler, I have a good, unlimited 4G data plan that offers unlimited text and talks. I no longer have to depend on or worry about hotspots for my internet connectivity.

I don’t even have to get a new SIM card wherever I go. A good data plan is not only a convenience but also provides for immediate connection with people.

Besides, it was always expensive depending on airport and airplane Wi-Fi for all my work.

And I ended up in many places with spotty Wi-Fi, making things even worse for me. There’s also the risk of connecting to an unsecured network sometimes.

I first used to use my Smartphone as a wireless hot spot while working. But, I soon started using a separate hot spot device when I found out that its internet connectivity is much better.

Traveling and Working: Bottom LineTraveling and Working Bottom Line

There you go. These seven bare essentials are more than enough for a successful work trip.

Choose clothes and accessories that make you presentable to meet others. Don’t forget your prescription medicine, if you have any.

And some over-the-counter medications like Tylenol in case.

You will be focusing more on work, so carry only the bare essentials you may need, and nothing more.

When you turn back, don’t rush into your duties immediately.

Relax first to avoid jet lag issues!

And if you’re a workaholic and tend to do your job even at home and not work and travel, consider designing a home office where you could totally focus on your tasks and provide high labor productivity.
