Why Vintage Fashion Is So Appealing

Vintage fashion seems like a contraction in terms. How can something old be fashionable?

Well, it turns out that it can. The vintage fashion movement has been picking up steam for at least the last fifteen years, and probably longer. With each passing generation, new art styles and fabrics get added to the total quantity of clothes choices out there. And it means that there is more and more to revisit.

But why exactly are brands like Buzz Rickson that play on this vintage theme so popular? What makes people keep going back to vintage brands time and time again?

The Expressiveness1920s

Take a look at cars from specific eras in history, like the 1930s or 1970s. They were incredibly expressive and told you everything that you needed to know about the person driving them.

The same is true of vintage clothes. They look so different from the run-of-the-mill stuff you get from generic retailers. When you wear something vintage, you stand out. Apparel from different times strikes you immediately.

The Timelessness

People interested in literature often talk about “timeless” themes. It’s the idea that a writer tapped into something genuinely universal in their work. For instance, Shakespeare covered themes like love, lust, suffering, and patience – all of which are still highly relevant today.

You see something similar in art. It is almost unthinkable that Leonardo DaVinci’s work in the Sistine Chapel will ever go out of date.  The same is true of a lot of vintage clothes. Specific timeless trends allow you to dig into history and pluck gems as and when you like.

Vintage clothing is often a safe bet for the very fact that it has managed to withstand the test of time. If it fits in a modern wardrobe, that’s a surefire indication that you should add it to your collection.

The History

People also fall in love with vintage clothes for history. Many outfits have certain associations that make them more appealing. For instance, military-themed brands harken back to more glorious seafaring days. Likewise, cultural clothing points to a time in the past that associates with your identity. It can help you literally feel more complete as a person.

The Individuality

While vintage clothing is fashionable, most people don’t wear it, preferring to fit in with the crowd’s rest.  If you’re the sort of person who likes to stand out, though, it could be right up your alley.

A lot of high street fashion is too generic. It tries not to offend and appeal to the broadest audience possible. What’s more, a lot of it is made to low standards.

Vintage, on the other hand, isn’t a victim of cheap mass production and unadventurous designers. Even if the original garment was never intended to become fashionable, it does so automatically when you put it on. It has a history and uniqueness about it that helps to celebrate your individuality. When you wear vintage, you don’t have to be like everyone else.
