How to Have Fog-free Vision In the Water

Don’t you hate foggy swimming goggles? Whenever your goggles steam up in the middle of a swim, it restricts your vision and completely disrupts your rhythm and flow. Unless you use a good anti fog spray for swimming goggles, you’ll have to swipe your lenses over and over every time you train or race.

What Causes Swim Goggles to Fog Up?

Whether you’re planning to do some casual laps at the pool or you’re stepping out for your Olympic final, you’ll need a pair of swim goggles. Besides protecting your eyes from saltwater or chlorine, they help maintain your vision in the water. In other words, your goggles play a critical role in your swimming experience.

Condensation, the culprit behind foggy goggles, occurs when water vapor changes its physical state from gas to liquid. The entire process starts with your body generating heat and water vapor while your goggles cool off in the water. When the temperature outside your goggles doesn’t match with the temperature inside them, tiny beads of water take form on the inside of your goggles, creating a foggy view.

Ways To Keep Your Vision Clear Underwater

Keep Your Core Body Temperature Down. The more you exert yourself, the more your goggles fog up. One of the best ways to stop fog on its tracks is to remain cool in the water.

You can keep your core body temperature down if you drink cold water or sports drinks when you’re taking breaks between laps. Moreover, splashing cold water on your face will also help your body cool down. Venting your goggles can also give you a fog-free swim.

Spit on Your Goggle Lenses

Spit on your swimming goggle lenses is another tried and tested swimming goggle anti-fog trick you’ll want to try. Although this may sound gross, gently spreading a lump of spittle on your lenses can effectively stop the droplets of water from taking form. This trick can be handy if you’re swimming in saltwater and don’t have access to freshwater.

Put a Bit of Baby Shampoo in Your Lenses

Apply a tiny dab of baby shampoo on each lens and use your fingers to spread it evenly. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off. Just make sure that you’re using a tear-free formula. The last thing you want is to get shampoo in your eyes while you’re in the water.

Fog-free vision in the water: Keep Your Goggles in Good Shape

If you’re using goggles that come with factory-coated anti-fog lenses, you’d want to keep them in good shape. Since touching the lenses with your bare hands will cause permanent damage to the coating, remember to follow the golden no-touching rule at all times.

Additionally, be sure to store your goggles properly every time. Before throwing them inside your swim bag, place them inside a hard case. If you don’t have a hard case, you may store them inside a pair of socks.

Use an Anti Fog Spray for Swimming Goggles

The easiest way to enjoy a fog-free swim is to use an anti-fog spray. Just find one that’s safe to use on all types of lenses, and you’re all set.
